Team leaders should be able to confidently answer the question, “How effective is the team you lead?” They should also be able to provide evidence that supports their conclusions. Which of the following ratings would you assign your team?

The team’s results are a visible indicator of how well the team is operating, but they don’t tell the whole story. You could have a lousy team that isn’t challenged. The results may be good, but the team is in no way living up to its potential. Conversely you may have a team that really has it all together but is stuck in nearly impossible circumstances. The results indicate an ineffective team, but it might just be a bad situation. To judge a team’s effectiveness, the leader must examine the results as just one of many indicators.

To help leaders assess their teams, we’ve created a process called the TeamCheck Assessment. It comes in two versions.

Leader’s Version: This is a free tool for you to use in order to organize your own opinions about how your team is doing. It consists of 49 characteristics of teamwork effectiveness, organized into six categories. At the end, you are provided with a rating on each category. It takes less than 10 minutes to complete. Team Member’s Version: This version is typically customized so that it perfectly matches the kind of team and hones in on some areas that my be obviously in need of attention. This simple web-based survey, allows your team members to share both their ratings and comments about key elements of team work. We collect the results, assuring your team members that their specific ratings and comments will not be shared. This anonymity is critical if you want honest feedback from all your team members.
