Talking to employees about pay can get a little thorny. It’s especially difficult if your managers are clueless about how the system works.
I remember a manager who promised me a big raise. I was skeptical because the dollar amount would have meant more than a two pay grade jump. The company had a rule that said nobody gets to jump more than two pay grades on one promotion. It might have been helpful if my manager understood that simple policy prior to making a promise to me.
