Giving employees a formal rating at the end of the year seems to be losing favor among a growing number of large employers. An all-encompassing label always seemed sort of arbitrary to me. Although, I’m betting that at any given moment a manager puts his/her employees into one of three categories:
- Stars. You lean on them, and they regularly impress you with their skills and work ethic.
- Contributors. They generally meet expectations and keep things running.
- Problems. They regularly create trouble.
