I first saw this concept used on an episode of The Newsroom. One group was putting together a plan. Another group was purposely kept out of the planning process and then brought together to tear apart the first team’s assumptions and conclusions.
The red team’s mission is to question everything. They think the unthinkable. They act like an adversary.
In theory, it’s the antidote to group think. While I’ve introduced into a decision process the idea of the devil’s advocate, I’ve never tried this. I’m thinking it’s time.
